History of this Airport
The site in which the airport is today was owned by De Gatwick family till the 19th century. Between 1920 and 1932, the land was used as an aerodrome. In 1933, approval for commercial flights was given by the Air Ministry. Hillman's Airways was the first airline operator from the airport. In 1935, British Airways became the principal operator of the Airport. The world's first circular terminal was built on this site in 1936. After some fatal accidents in 1936, the airport base for Royal Air Force. After the Second World War, the airport functioned as a civil airfield. During this period, maintenance works took place and many charter and cargo flights were operated from here. Gatwick Airport was the first airport that established a direct link to a railway station. After changing hands and ownerships with different names, the airport was back to commercial functioning. The Airport has two terminals and one runway. The two terminals: North and South were expanded in 2000 and 2001. It backed the award for the "Best Privatized Airport" in 2005.Website

The first impact when arriving from Gatwick Express from London was that the signaling is not as abundant as one should expect. The check-in desks are not clearly signed and I had to ask for the airline I wanted. Waiting rooms for gates are dark and gloomy (at least the one from where my Ryanair flight for Dublin would depart). Although spacious, the shops/restaurants area is a bit confusing. Staff, however was quite nice. The flight was delayed and again the information system proved not to be much efficient as the electronic boards are oddly scattered.

Liked it, nice and clean cool. The staff need a lesson in friendliness but acceptable, just. The Gatwick express into London is really good, get your ticket ON THE TRAIN. A very acceptable, but far from perfect alternative to that hell on Earth, also called Heathrow.

A good airport for getting in/out of London, none of the congestion/delays that so often occur at LHR. Don't use the Gatwick Express - use one of the commuter trains which stop at East Croydon, they only take 5 minutes longer and they are quite a lot cheaper.

Quite spacious departures area. The signage to the gates could do with improvement, and the catering.... Travelling out from LGW on a Tuesday morning (about 08:30), I had about 45 minutes from getting through security to boarding time. Orange Juice and a coffee seemed a good idea. Not a hope! Ridiculous queues at every catering outlet. Even tried Boots and WH Smiths for an OJ carton to take away. Couldn't even see the end of the queue in WHS! Obviously a victim of its own success in attracting passengers, the facilities haven't caught up. Take a picnic!

Early morning departure from North Terminal to Paphos and evening return a fortnight later. Checked in hold luggage the night before - worth doing (despite having to pay £2-50 for the short term car park to do so) as the airport was empty and tranquil. Next morning through security quickly, and the only slight grumble was that the boarding gate indication wasn't displayed until well after the designated time. On return had to wait maybe ten minutes for the luggage carousel to be indicated, otherwise painless. Not the airport's fault, but the traffic from the airport to the M25 was horrid!

North Terminal - Returning yesterday we had booked a taxi pickup from the new Arrivals/Departure roadside zone-- what a big mistake! Working out how to get there from Arrivals was a challenge in itsself -up the lift to 1st floor, then down another lift to the ground floor taxi pickup point - the signing was non existant and it was sheer luck we got through. Then waiting for the taxi we got soaked as the whole area is exposed to the drenching weather!

A midday departure to Tallin from the South terminal. No queue at check in, security was quick and easy and the security staff were very friendly. A pleasant experience all round.

We booked meet and greet with BCP parking for our holiday in October. On the way out, the service was excellent - the man met us on time and was very efficient. However, on our return, at 5.30 am with 2 babies and one 6 year old, in the cold, we had to wait at least 20 mins for our car to be brought round. We paid (not cheap) for a meet and greet service, not a wait and greet. If they can't get the car to you on time, then don't advertise the service. Very very poor. Will pay extra to park ...

Gatwick airport in itself was very pleasant, plenty of places to eat or just get a drink, lots of space and shops. It is a massive airport but was easy to find my way around as this year I went to Tunisia Africa, the overall flight was very nice, massive amounts of space on the comfortable plane, tvs, films, food, etc.
Checking in was a little bit out of control but if you get there really early and checked in fast like I did then it is not so bad, otherwise it will be chaos. The airport including the toilets were very clean but very busy, the people were fairly nice and it was efficient and appropriate for being such a busy airport, I am pleased with it although the airport itself is quite far away.

Gatwick gets really busy, so arrive early! my flight was from the North Terminal but i'd read the reviews and decided that because there was more seating in the South Terminal, that's where i'd go. however, by the time i arrived at 11:30pm all the best places were taken and i was left with hard, wooden seating (albeit without armrests) in a brightly lit area with chilly aircon and loud muzak. not ideal and i didn't get a wink of sleep, but the good thing is that Costa Coffee, WHSmith and M&S are open more or less all night. However, when i finally gave up at 3:30 and got the shuttle train (it's re-opened now) to the North Terminal, i discovered that easyjet's check-in desks are open all night and i could have gone through to departures, where it's quieter and there's loads of the upholstered blue seating. I'll remember that next time...!
